Safeguarding

Oakfield Junior School is committed to ensuring the welfare and safety of all our children in school. We believe that pupils have a right to learn in a supportive, caring and safe environment which includes the right to protection from all types of abuse; where staff are vigilant for signs of any pupil in distress and are confident about applying the/our safeguarding processes to avert and alleviate any such problems.

Safeguarding is about ensuring that everyone is safe from harm – safe from bullying, safe from people who could abuse, safe from discrimination or harassment – and that we all feel safe in our environment.

If you are ever concerned about the safety or well‐being of someone at our school please talk to one of the school’s Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs).

SAFEGUARDING STATEMENT

This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This means that we have a Child Protection Policy and procedures in place.

Parents and carers are welcome to read the Policy on request. Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about our pupils are discussed with his/her parents/carers first unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child’s welfare. If a member of staff is concerned about a child’s welfare, they will record their concern, and any observations or conversation heard, and report to one of the DSLs as soon as possible the same day.

If a member of staff has concerns which relate to the actions or behaviour of another member of staff (which could suggest that s/he is unsuitable to work with children) then this will be reported to one of the DSLs in confidence, who will refer the matter to the Headteacher (or the Chair of Governors if the concern relates to the Headteacher) who will consider what action to take.

SAFEGUARDING ARRANGEMENTS

Going Home Arrangements

A reminder to all parents to ensure that you have filled in page 85 of your child’s planner outlining what the going home arrangements are for the Autumn Term. (This will need to be updated termly or more frequently if arrangements change).

Please do this together with your child to ensure that they are clear about expectations.

All pupils and staff need to have a clear understanding of who will be meeting them on each day of the week, where and when.

e.g. Monday (Mrs Martin-mother) top playground 3:15pm

e.g. Tuesday (Mrs Mason-child minder) gazebo 4:00pm after football club

e.g. Wednesday (Simon-brother year 6) bottom playground 3:15pm

Please ensure that teachers & office staff are made aware of any changes to pick up arrangements and that these changes are added to pg 85 if they are permanent.

Parents must give written consent in the planner on page 85 if they have given permission for their child to walk home on their own.

This responsibility should only be given to pupils in upper key stage two (year six ideally) in preparation for secondary school and where parents feel confident their children know how to keep themselves safe.

Cycling/Scooting to School

If your child is cycling/scooting to school independently, please ensure the ‘cycling/scooting to school permission’ form has been completed (follow link: Cycle/Scoot to school permission form Years 5 and 6 ). Parents are asked to ensure that their child is wearing a helmet and has a good understanding of road safety before giving consent for them to do so.

Please ensure your child also knows on which days they are attending a club and where to meet the adult who is leading the club. Registers are taken at each club to ensure all pupils are present. If for some reason your child is not able to attend the club, please ensure the club leader is informed to avoid time having to be spent trying to establish pupils whereabouts.

All pupils in year 3 pupils are handed over to a responsible adult on the top playground at the end of the school day by a member of staff.

Pupils in year 4 Cherry Class & year 6 will be dismissed via the side doors where they can meet with their responsible adult.

Pupils in year 5 and year 4 Apple class will be dismissed onto the top playground.

All pupils are routinely reminded that if the adult they are expecting to fetch them is not where they are expecting them to be, they need to make their way back to the school office for support.

Please remind your child to never leave school site without a responsible adult’s permission.

Mobile Phones

Pupils are not allowed to bring mobile phones into school without a permission form being completed by parents (follow link: Mobile Phone Permission Form - Year 6 only).Only pupils in year six have permission to bring a mobile phone into school.  Pupils are not allowed to use their phones will onsite. If a pupil is seen using their phone on site this will be removed by a member of staff and parents will be asked to collect the phone from the office. Mobile phones will need to be handed into the year six class teacher at the start of the day before registers close and will be handed back at the end of the school day.

Car Park

A reminder to all parents that pupils are not to allowed to walk through the staff car park or be dropped off in the staff car park. This area is out of bounds. Please ensure your child makes use of pedestrian walkways only to ensure their safety.

Playground Equipment

A reminder that no children are allowed to use the climbing frame or outdoor gym equipment without an Oakfield staff member present. This equipment is out of bounds before school and after school.

Thank you for helping ensure your child is kept safe by adhering to these school safeguarding expectations.
